REVIEW: Detective Comics Annual #2
 “Why does this man even have a bed?”“ ”“ Alfred Pennyworth.
Synopsis:
This issue opens with an exciting scene that takes place in Paris. Doug and Michelle are celebrating their anniversary only to get robbed. But the robber is in for a bit of a surprise, then we go to a bigger robbery taking place at a bijouterte. Then it“s back to Gotham city with the Batman on yet another night patrol. A dark introduction to another great tale featuring the caped crusader.
The Creative Team:
Peter J. Tomasi shows us an overworked underappreciated Bruce Wayne as the Dark Knight in a dangerous land. He“s so overworked that he must get out his little black book, no, not the one with girls“ numbers, the little black casebook with the Batman“s unusual and unexplainable adventures. I love that Tomasi is giving us a dose of Bruce Wayne, the billionaire playboy in this issue as we travel to Europe on an adventure that sees the resurrection of one of Batman“s most dangerous foes, or does it? The noir aspect is strong and that“s what I like. In one amusing scene a young man is seeking Bruce“s autograph and Bruce pays him a thousand dollars just to leave him alone. The humor factor is just as strong as the mystery element and that makes it an even more enjoyable read. Great stuff includes the appearance of Sophia Zervas and the attempted robbery of Alfred. Travis Moore and Max Raynor are a dynamic duo of great artistic ability as they render the Batman and his friends and foes in a menacing light. They do a tremendous job with illustrating this annual and I love their versions of these characters, highlights include the splash of Batman pouncing on our vile villain and the splash of the real threat of this issue taking Batman by surprise. In
Conclusion:
The surprises keep coming. Batman is right in guessing that this issues villain (no spoilers) isn“t the classic incarnation of the character, but he isn“t ready for the truth as he guesses wrong as to who the villain actually is. A great page turner that deserves our undivided attention. The action heats up and this issue concludes with an adrenaline pumping bang! **** (9.2 rating)
