REVIEW: Doctor Strange and the Sorcerers Supreme #1

An ancient evil threatens to unravel the fabric of reality, and one Sorcerer Supreme may not be enough. Doctor Strange must unite past, present and future Sorcerer Supreme’s to stem the coming darkness ”“ Merlin, a much younger Ancient One, Wiccan, and more! But Strange should watch his back, not all of these Sorcerers have his best interests in mind”¦

Following  “The Last Days of Magic,”“ Doctor Stephen Strange is collecting mystical artifacts to restore magic the Empirikul tried to destroy.  The story opens in the past, finding Merlin locking away an unknown threat.  We return to the present with Strange battling Q“uvin the Malevolent followed by Merlin kidnapping Stephen to face a greater threat in The Forgotten.

This collection of Supremes could lead to an interesting series, although I cannot help but think this is the Mighty Marvel Marketing Machine at work.  The book is paced quickly but to be fair it is the opener and brings in a large number of characters.  I like the direction they are going and acknowledging “The Last Days of Magic” keeps the continuity police satisfied.  There is no doubt this is a Doctor Strange title, but Mr. Thomspon and team do a solid job of giving each sorcerer their page time.  The script leaves enough questions open to entice readers to continue and honestly what better time to add another Doctor Strange title.

The star in this opener is the Jordie Bellaire colors, which shift between Merlin and Strange and add to each of the teams characters every bit as much as pencil and ink.  The time travel double splash was a perfect visual into the world of Doctor Strange.

I enjoyed both of the Doctor Strange offerings this week with this title slightly ahead if you are a long time fan of the Sorcerer Supreme.
