REVIEW: Donald Duck #4

Donald Duck #4
Writer – Rodolfo Cimino
Artist – Romano Scarpa
Inker – Sandro Del Conte
Colours – Christos Kentrotis
Letters – Travis & Nicole Seitler

Let’s judge this book by its cover… A fun cover Donald coming to his nephews rescue before they’re made into a Yeti’s dinner. It’s bright, colourful and very Disney. Everything you want from a Donald Duck cover.

If you’re sitting comfortably we can begin… This issue has 3 stories but I’m just going to review the main Donald story the perfect calm.

So it’s gift day, a day were everyone exchanges gifts (no not Christmas) Donald has no money to buy gifts for his friends and isn’t too happy until he finds a shiny silver dollar, over the moon that he can now buy gum balls for everyone, he rushes off to get them when he crashes into someone with his expensive crystal gifts knocking all of them into the road where they are crushed. Not having the money to replace them Donald is sent to jail for 5 days. While inside he meets a philosopher who teaches him how to gain the perfect calm. When he’s released he heads to the Himalayas for his finally test of calmness. His nephews follow him and save him from a pair of Yetis. When they return home Uncle Scrooge discovers that anyone near the newly calm Donald feels a sense of total peace and decides to use this as way to make money. The philosopher warns Scrooge that no personal gain is allowed without dire consequences. Ignoring him Scrooge continues to use Donald when the worlds economy takes a turn and threatens to bankrupt Scrooge. The only way to save Scrooges money and the world is to remove Donald for 10 months, so his nephews take him back to the Himalayas saving the world.

This is not what I thought a Donald Duck book would be like. I was thinking slap stick with plenty of jokes. You get neither. This was not for kids. It’s tones of world economy and spiritual awakenings don’t play to what kids want to read about, nor most grown ups for that matter. I remember watching duck tales as a kid and this was not even close. The back up stories can’t even save this book. How can you get a Donald Duck book so wrong? All you want is a misunderstanding and Donald losing his temper and taking it out in his nephews. How hard is that?

The Good, the Bad and the Star rating…
The Good – Colourful art.
The Bad – The story is not funny and not interesting.
The Stars – I was looking forward this after seeing the cover. But after reading it it’s only a 1 star book.

Hey, I'm Shane.
Been into comics since I was about 5. Loved watching Wonder Woman and superboy in the 80's.
I Started reading seriously about 10 years ago. Began to collect a few comic series, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, Teen Titans, Justice League of America and Superman Batman all pre flashpoint. Being honest that was my favourite run.
