Review: Elena Divinity Rising TP

Hard to believe but Darren Pearce“s Elena Divinity Rising  is based on things that happened. For about 20 Years, the US government funded psychic experimentation to boost the nation’s security. Despite criticism that it was scientifically insupportable and had produced no concrete results, the program continued to be financed by Congress to the tune of 20 million of dollars on an intelligence unit at Fort Meade that employed officers claiming psychic powers. Of interest to Intelligence agencies, ranging from the Defense Department to the Drug Enforcement Agency, were the locations of U.S. hostages, the whereabouts of Libyan leader Col. Muammar al Gaddafi and the to interdict drug operations. The Defense Intelligence Agency, the program was transferred in July to the CIA, which now wants to kill it.

Stuart Jennet is on board for the series artwork. Professionally done and easy on the eyes.  The visuals do an excellent job of complementing the story.  Jennet“ use of tones is really good at showing the gravitas of the moment.

 As far as plot movement, there is more than enough action to keep the reader occupied.  The issue is that there were too many flashbacks in the beginning that broke the flow of the action. Though, the intent may have been to help to understand the character, placing them in the middle of the action made the flashbacks comes out of nowhere, and therefor lacks gravity.

Out of 5 stars I give it a 3.0 Elena Divinity Rising Is a solid comic. I felt myself emotionally invested in the character and the narrative.  I would love to what happens next with it.   If you“re look to show some indie love but actually want to read something really good this is your comic.
