Review: ELVIRA MISTRESS OF DARK #2
Synopsis:
This issue opens with Cassandra Peterson’s most popular character giving exposition to the one and only Edgar Allen Poe. They wind up going to one of Poe’s favorite taverns and Poe doubts her story that she is a time traveler. But she assures him that his work will go down in history and he will be revered as one of the great authors of all time, despite his current woes. However, it seems that Elvira wasn’t the only one who traveled through time!
The Creative Team:
David Avollone is tasked with bringing Elvira to the medium of comic books and not just have her host her own anthology series. She’s made from the same mold that brought readers Vampirella and so far this is a good run. Can Elvira rise to the occasion and avoid the obvious comparisons to Vampirella, or will she simply be considered a clone of a more popular character? Well, Avollone and friends are sure going to have fun trying. For one thing, Elvira has a sharper wit than Vampirella and she’s obviously from earth, so there goes the Stranger in a Strange Land, fish out of water narrative. This issue finds Elvira lost in time! Great stuff includes the revelation of who her follower is and the next era that our protagonist winds up in.
Dave Acosta delivers his usual fine illustrations to this title and he seems to enjoy the Elvira mythos which makes his work even more fun. His renderings are spot on; Cassandra Peterson, Edgar Allen Poe and our guest antagonist are all well represented here. His atmosphere is eerie as any horror comic should be and yet it’s also light-hearted giving it the same feel as, say Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Lost Boys. Highlights include our mysterious antagonist’s transformation into a winged creature of the night (though not the one you might expect, giving it a nice twist.) and Edgar’s tipping over a wine rack onto our antagonist.
In Conclusion:
The two Daves have given us another worthy female lead in this mistress of the dark. It’s similar to Vampirella but not quite as serious. For those who love Vampirella but crave something more. this will fulfill your fantasies. If you’re a big fan of Elvira, to begin with, this comic book won’t disappoint you. If you’ve seen every episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and still crave more, give this comic a shot, you can file them next to your Dark Horse collection. A fun comic worthy of its namesake. *** (8.3 rating)
