Review: Exiles #6

Synopsis:

This issue opens with the Exiles celebrating a stunning victory over Kang: the Conqueror. Though this victory comes with a great loss as one of their own has fallen. Then we cut to the Bahamas where Sandra and Clarice are relaxing, along with the rest of our heroes in a much-needed vacation. The Exiles show their thanks to Sandra by doing various chores and repairs around the island. Blink lets her teammates know that there’s another mission she’s needed on with her old team and this team agrees to assist her.

The Creative Team:

Saladin Ahmed gives our heroes a much-needed break, however, being the super-powered beings that they are, that break doesn’t last very long. The author takes our quirky characters back in time (more time travel) to the old west. Nate deduces that something is wrong since none of the inhabitants of this second-rate Dodge find it odd that a bunch of strangers clad in spandex with a winged horse is in their presence! Ahmed likes to keep us guessing as he takes us to varied and diverse locations as our heroes fight evil in all its forms. Great stuff includes the young Wolvie trying to get in on a poker game at a rough and rowdy tavern and the origin of the old west town that they wind up in.

Rod Reis does a fine job as the guest artist on this issue. The panels seem painted which brings a surreal feel to the proceedings as Reis’ panels help create the proper atmosphere for the unusual setting in this incredibly fun issue. Highlights include the opening splash showing the fate of Kang from the previous story. Also, the splash where our heroes enter an old west town. It was like High Plains Drifter meets the X-Men.

In Conclusion:

I really enjoyed this genre fusion of epic proportions as Superhero fantasy meets Western chivalry. I always like my comic book company crossovers but I love when two unlikely genre’s clash as well and this is an interesting mash-up which makes for an intriguing read. It’s an amusing situation as a recognizable team of baddies saunter into town and has the townsfolk fearin’ for their lives. I reckon that the Exiles are fish out of water in this Westworld parody and it’s about darn-tootin’ time that they got down to facing the addle-headed Magnus gang before any more Bad Medicine can come from these no-good tyrants! Just when we think things are going to pan out, a surprise painter shows up and…to be continued.
