Review: Faithless #3 (of 5)
Midway point for this confluence of faith, sex and the devil sees Faith dealing with some minor ramifications of her past influencing. With her not quite girlfriend about to hit Turin, Faith is left to her own devices which leads her into all sorts of trouble.
Faith’s life is about to get even more complicated as temptation raises it’s head. But it is not all clear sailing as a loss affects Faith and leads her to a rather unscrupulous devil in sheep’s clothing.
Brian Azzarello finally leads us to a place with Faith that has been hinted at through the previous issues. For a while it seemed that Faith’s use of her brand of magic wouldn’t have any sort of impact. This is probably the first issue in which we see Faith out of her depth, especially as her losses are stacking up, she is at her most vulnerable and actions taken may mean that one possible loss may become quite permanent. Azzarello’s script meanders it way through the various stumbles of decisions that make up Faith’s story. It is good to see Faith’s supporting cast enter the fray somewhat, their connections being the very thing that grounds her. There is a question to be asked around Faith’s intentions, given as she was flattered by some undue attention, was it really not that inevitable that she would end up in another person’s bed?
Maria Llovet’s art, if anything, is even more scratchy and uneven than the last issue. Is this a conscious choice in order to accentuate the overall descent into chaos that Faith is going through? That aside, the book feels a little harder to read than other issues. That could be down to the tone the book has taken; of that I shouldn’t be surprised bearing in mind Azzarello’ s influence, and here Llovet is perfectly in tune with that vibe. I would prefer the magic elements that appear in the book to be more structured, but that is a personal preference rather than any slight on Llovet’s line work. I think I mentioned this previously; there s a Klaus Janson influence in play. The colors are as you have come to expect from the book, a kind of dirty tepid scheme that implies that darkness is around nearly every corner. AndWorld Design provides the letters, doing a good job of emphasis for the various emotional beats of this issue.
This series is bubbling along nicely. By know, readers should be used to the amount of sex and nudity that is on show. It will interesting to see how much further Faith can lose herself and when with the bounce back, if there is any, she will attempt to find herself anew.
