REVIEW: Fight Club 2 #1

Story: Chuck Palahniuk
Art: Cameron Stewart
Colors: Dave Stewart
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: May 27, 2015

It started as a novel, and earned a movie adaptation that was WILDLY popular. This week, the world of Fight Club makes it return through a new medium.

Fight Club 2 #1 is written by creator Chuck Palahniuk and artist Cameron Stewart. Our main character (now going by the name Sebastian) is back, along with Marla singer and everyone’s favorite alter ego, Tyler Durden. The story revisits Sebastian’s life years after the events of the original novel. He’s now married to Marla, and they have a son. Sebastian is again bored with life, and Marla is bored with him. The issue opens with Marla filling the reader in on what’s been going on as she participates in a support group she has no business being at. We learn Sebastian’s alter ego is who she is actually in love with, and has grown to despise the mundane man her husband has become. She even reveals that she has secretly been encouraging the return of Tyler Durden. Meanwhile, Sebastian, also bored with his own life, is just going through the motions of every day life. But lately, he has felt the increasing presence of his alter ego that he fights so hard to keep contained.

The entire first issue is basically setup to bring the reader up to speed with what has been going on in Sebastian and Marla’s life. Palahniuk paces the issue well, and gives you details about each of the story’s main characters. Cameron Stewart does a wonderful job translating the writer’s script into visuals for the reader. Excellent page layout and character design make this a fun and interesting read. Colorist Dave Stewart’s contributions also contribute to a terrific first issue.

Final Verdict: With a strong creative team, good source material and a BEAUTIFUL cover by David Mack, Fight Club 2 #1 is a must read.
