Review: Fortnite x Marvel: Zero War #1
DC had an excellent Fortnite crossover series so now it’s time for the same writing team to take a crack at the Marvel universe entering the battle with Fortnite x Marvel: Zero War. The former series focused on Batman entering a muted field of combat, while this series focuses on a very talkative Spider-Man trying to gather allies from his universe. This is a much less interesting concept although it does allow for a lot more interaction with the Fortnite characters.
The issue is bookended with a visit to see Wolverine/Patch by Spidey, Agent Jones and The Imagined. The seen is a callback to the X-men Origins scene where Professor X and Magneto first attempt to recruit Logan with a quick impolite refusal. Spidey isn’t so easily swayed though so he dives into the story of Zero Point.
The Imagined Order is trying to reset everything but The Seven are working against them. They are gathering warriors from various realities outside the loop to build an opposing force. The Foundation leads the team in a search for a Mecha built by Paradigm which Origin is able to track to the moon. Spidey suggests bringing in the Avengers to help. Origin tells him about a fragment of Galactus linked to the Zero Point which could reposed the Mecha. The team of Foundation, Jones, The Imagined and Spider-Man makes
their way to the central Zero Point where they are attacked. Foundation holds Gunnar off while the others escape to the Marvel Universe. They run into Captain Marvel and ask her to call all the Avengers. Iron Man plans to lead the Avengers into battle as Spidey and his Fortnite friends head off to find the Galactus Fragment. Since they need a tracker they end with recruiting Wolverine who agrees to come when The Imagined promises him the best fight he’s ever had. The issue ends with Doctor Doom being recruited into the Imagined Order.
This issue lacks the creativity of the DC series but includes more interaction with the Fortnite characters. As is typical with Spider-Man, there is lots of dialogues, quips and discussion. This includes way too much exposition but hopefully that will become less prominent as the series proceeds. The art keeps all characters easily recognizable but lacks creative flair and is inconsistent. Some panels are amazing but others feel rushed and incomplete. A few of the character just look wrong as with Captain Marvel.
This book is a fun romp and hopefully we see more characters from the Marvel universe more fully interact with the Fortnite characters moving forward. It’s not a perfect book but it has enough action and characterization to hopefully draw in new readers and help them understand what makes comics fun.
