REVIEW: Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps. #33: The Lantern Burns Bright

It“s been a little while since I have checked in on the adventures of Hal “Highball”“ Jordan and the rest of the Green Lantern Corps.  The last issue I read was in the early New 52 and Hal was no longer a Green Lantern, but a space outlaw, and the rest of the Corps. was missing.  I just couldn“t get into it.  Coming into issue #33 of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps. was a return to the kind of Lantern book I could get into.

Robert Venditti starts off the Twilight of the Guardians arc with a great jumping on point. We get a great establishing of the status quo and who everyone in the main cast is without it feeling forced, but instead like part of the natural story flow.

I was particularly impressed with a scene where Hal and fellow Lantern Kyle Rayner are working together. The interaction between the two was great and stayed true to who they each where. I also loved seeing Kyle back in his classic costume, which was brought to the page by Jack Herbert using breakdowns by Tom Derenick. To me that is Kyle“s iconic look and I“m happy to see it back.

Of course color is very important in a Green Lantern book and DC was lucky to have Jason Wright handling the colors on the book.  Having to make so many shades and uses of green pop to the eye is no easy task, but Wright“s color palettes not only worked well with the Lanterns, but made each environment feel like it“s own place. They did not blend into each other. Alien worlds felt alien, even from each other.

The lettering of Dave Sharpe does a great job of conveying emotion.  A great example is the new young Lantern Somar-Le. Her excitement at flying around with a power ring makes you almost feel like you“re flying along side her.

We get the return of an old rival of the Guardians, which I won“t spoil for you so you can enjoy the big reveal at the end, but it looks to be an interesting story that“s developing. While I won“t reveal the identity of the new big bad I will say they are powerful enough to kidnap Guardians Ganthet and Sayd.

The creative team has created a giant green energy hand and pulled me back in. I will be putting Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps. back on my pull list and going green.
