Review: Harley Quinn #36

“…I’m not fluent in blithering bat-creature gibberish.” – Francine

Synopsis:

this issue opens on Coney Island where a couple of dudes just got done a monster ride and one of them hurled all over his buddy. Then a strange bat creature picks the one that got hurled on up and flies him overhead then drops him on a passerby. This issue sees the Man-Bat formula put to wicked use and turning different people into strange creatures.

The Creative Team:

Frank Tieri seems to be having fun creating different critters in this issue, mostly with the Man-Bat drug. The pace is fast as Professor Langstrom frantically searches for the antidote and creatures are wreaking havoc all around him. Great stuff includes the professor not remembering where he put the antidote and some incredible fight scenes between the creatures in question. I really enjoyed this book.

Inaki Miranda is having an equal amount of fun in the rendering of said bat creatures. The splash was the She-bat picks up Francine is a winner plus how the panels come flying out at you at a chaotic pace during the fight scenes helps to move the story along. Incredible art work on the part of Miranda! The battle between Harley-bat and She-bat is another highlight.

In Conclusion:

Though this issue is action packed and on the surface seems to be just another battle issue, there’s a lot more going on here than that. Towards the end we see Harley reflecting on her popularity and wondering if, somehow that popularity is responsible for the mess that ensued. The professor being unable to remember where the antidote is a nice touch and making him all the more real. How many times have we forgotten where we put things, even though we think we put them in a special place that we won’t forget? Then this issue looks like it’s going to be the final chapter in this story but there’s a nice twist at the end to let us know that things are a little fishy and the arrival of…to be continued. ***1/2 (8.7 rating)
