Review: Hunt for Wolverine #1
What’s in a name? Batman Returns? He didn’t return because he hadn’t left! Attack of the Clones? it was a rescue, not an attack! Now we have The Hunt for Wolverine; a book that seems to epitomise it’s title as we already know he is kicking around the Marvel Universe.
The book starts in typical Marvel fashion, with a recap which pretty much tells us the starting play. Step up the Reavers in need of some cash to help pay for upgrades and repairs. Luckily for them, there is a bunch of adamantium acting as a monument surrounding a flesh and blood body that is surrounding another bunch of adamantium. From there, this story that is, from a certain point of view, actually a recap to lead us to how Wolvie is walking around the universe, recaps even more stuff! Anyone got a nosebleed yet?
The book contains two stories, both written by Charles Soule. The first story is the action story, kind of. There are enough character moments that I am sure will impress long term X-Fans, even Cyclops manages to prove a point. Regardless of the cast of X-people on show, it’s obvious that they all hold their fallen comrade in high esteem. The Reavers seem like an odd choice for the bad guys, but to be fair they are totally expendable. The second story is more set up than anything. Together they make an odd whole.
David Marquez provides the art for the first part, with a style that captures an X-style well. You can make out who is who well enough and the panels carry with them a level of intensity that sits well with the central idea. There are heavy inks to be sure and Rachelle Rosenberg joins in with some dark colors. It is a shame that Paulo Siquiera’s work on the second half doesn’t quite have the same feel. To be fair, Siquiera is left with somewhat of a talking head chapter.
If I am honest, I much prefer the idea of a story within a story. For me, Wolvie’s return would have been better served by hinting and tipping through his own book. Here, given that we know where we end up, this book is less of a hunt and more of a steps retraced.
