Review: Injustice #21

I was trying to think of a good opening line here, but none would be as attention-grabbing as the opening dialog in ‘Injustice #21″. If you want to know what I’m talking about, open page 1, and see for yourself. I wonder what was going through Tom Taylor’s mind when he wrote that first sentence.
Writer, Tom Taylor continues his Injustice 2 run with issue 21. Instead of one plot in this issue, it was multiple subplots that shared about the same amount of time. It can work, but it’s certainly something to note. With as something as big as Injustice 2, that may be the only choice. The issue starts out with training Supergirl. The issue also follows Blue Beetle and Booster Gold, as they find out some exciting news. Then it jumps into a part about Robin. The issue ends with the start of this gorilla rebellion thing. (“Planet of the Apes” vibes anyone?) I’m actually not complaining about this format. Each part of the issue had entertaining elements to it. I thought the different subplots tied in nicely together. I’m a fan of Tom Taylor’s work, and he reminded me why, with this issue.

Overall it was good, but there were some story problems. Every time I saw something that I didn’t like, something awesome made me forget it. There may have been weak aspects here and there, but there were many more entertaining aspects.

I thought what humor was in the issue was well… humorous. Booster Gold, Ted Kord, and others provide some chuckles. It’s apparent that Tom Taylor has a good sense of humor, and more importantly, knows when to use it. I really enjoyed his take on Booster Gold.
The art was good, but not my preferred style. I prefer more detail and more shading and lines etc. There was a specific panel that I totally saw wrong at first, and it looked pretty wrong. Generally, the issue looked good though. I can’t ethically knock the artist, for not drawing the issue for me specifically.
Honestly, I’m starting to regret not jumping on board the Injustice 2 train. I figured I’d wanna finish the first series, but I was able to jump right in. Reading an issue 21, without having read any other part of the series, and not being lost, is a pleasant feeling. Sure I know the general story of the Injustice Saga, but it’s still impressive. Sometimes I have a hard time jumping on stories in the middle. This series was not hard to get into. This was definitely a fun issue.
