Review: Kong on The Planet of the Apes #3

Synopsis:

We’re now on part three of this unique franchise. Zira is recording in her diary to give us a bit of exposition. Cornelius and Zaius are consulting with Ni’ta, which, of course, upsets the gorillas. They find Kong to be a magnificent beast, a link in the chain to ape evolution. Kong seems bewildered by the idea of apes the size of humans. We seem to be at the calm before the storm as the different apes seem unsure of how to react to each other.

The Creative Team:

Ryan Ferrier brings us to a chapter of contemplation. Ni’ta is disgusted with her people’s penchant for playing it safe, leading to a culture that she feels is stagnating. Fear keeps them from branching out and discovering more about the world that surrounds them. Then we come to General Ursus and his gorillas, who seem to want to use Kong as a weapon in their war on humanity. And finally Cornelius and Zira argue about Kong’s meaning for existence. We’re giving a triple onslaught as to what they need to do about Kong. It’s a philosophical bent that’s great stuff. Kong;s presence has shaken the very fabric of the planet, and, how could it not? That isn’t to say that this issue is completely without action, it clearly is not as Kong goes berserk.

Carlos Mango has our apes down tight! his renderings of the apes, including Kong are spot on. One splash has Kong towering over ape and human alike. We can feel the characters helplessness as we watch them flee for their lives in front of a colossal giant that should not exist, yet does. The panels give us extreme close-ups mixed with extreme long shots drawing us into this tale of a universe gone mad.

In Conclusion:

The tensions that arise within the leaders of ape city are understandable as the threat of Kong looms large. Zaius and Zira both threaten to strip Ursus of his rank as he takes matters into his own hands against direct orders. It’s an issue not to be missed as our heroes face a decision of monumental consequences. Can Ape and human  work side by side as both their worlds are in the mighty ones paws? Is Kong more of a threat to the apes or the humans? Will Ursus have his rank taken from him? To be continued… ***1/2 (8.4 rating)
