Review: Legion of Super Heroes #9: Trial of the Legion Part 2

“I am sick of all the talking.” – Wildfire.

Synopsis:

The Legion has a new member in Tasmia Mallor A.K.A. Shadow Lass. It appears the Legion is on trial for breaching the space-time continuum. Video presentations of the accused are viewed by the President of Planets beginning with Dawnstar. Each video that is reviewed reveals something new about the protagonists and their views on the United Planets. It’s a fun way to get some exposition across on what the members are all about in this seeming re-boot of the title.

The Creative Team

Bringing new life to the Legion of Super heroes without seeming redundant won’t be easy since the title’s been around since the 1960s. But so far this title is having fun re-introducing the iconic characters to a new generation, We can only hope that Bendis, unlike Hollywood lately, they will respect the source material and original fans will be happy with the new/old title. I’m enjoying this kind of re-boot as the President seems to be in opposition to the creation of the Legion, the conflict is one the heroes will have to overcome. This has been done before many times but I’m confident that Bendis will do a superb job of making it original and fresh to this title. Great Stuff includes the appearance of Ultra-boy’s father and Mon-El’s instant reaction to his appearance.

The art is simply remarkable as DC brings out some of their best talent, unique to each page. Our heroes are rendered with a modern sensibility yet are reminiscent of the Curt Swan and Al Plastino era, which should draw in fans of the original series. Highlights include Mon’El’s battle with the military leader of Rimbor and the splash of Nura Nal with the dire warning that all may not be right on future earth.

In Conclusion:

The Legion of Superheroes seems to be getting back to its roots and doing so in an awesome way. I enjoyed this issue as it seems to be setting us up for great things to come. We get some excellent guest stars from the DC hero gallery and all seems to be righting itself in this universe. I can’t wait for the next issue. *** 8.3 rating!
