Review: LOIS LANE #2 (OF 12)

Greg Rucka keeps the tension taut in the second issue of the Lois Lane 12-issue mini-series (or maxi-series as DC insists on calling it). He is taking advantage of the format to feature her in a way that Lois rarely gets shown in the comics. Even in modern stories, Lois is often the damsel in distress needing to be saved by Superman.

But here, Rucka (Wonder Woman, Whiteout, New X-Men) presents her as a woman who knows her strengths and plays to them. Busy investigating corruption cases in both the US and Russia, where another reporter who worked on the story was found dead and her reported “suicide”“ is unraveling fast. That will mean trouble for Lois as she gets closer to the truth.

Oh and if that isn“t enough, the celebrity news shows, can“t get enough mileage of video showing her in a passionate kiss with Superman and what this means for her marriage to Clark Kent. She is facing a problem that neither Superman nor Clark Kent can rescue her from.

Mike Perkins (Captain America, House of M: Avengers) does a fantastic job with the art on this book. Not only does he capture the beauty and grit of Chicago, but he balances the two to bring out the city“s charm. It makes me want to go back there again.

Additionally, I love how he presents the quiet interactions between the characters. Whether it is Lois strolling with Clark on the riverwalk, talking to Renee Montoya in a bar or Stretching out while on the phone with Perry White, Perkins“s ability to show how they are reacting to each other adds so much to the story.

Lois Lane is an interesting character in comics. She“s long been an inherent mass of contradictions: an independent woman who always needs to be saved; smart enough to uncover well-hidden illegal syndicate but can“t figure out that Clark and Superman are the same person; etc. Ruck and Perkins are giving us a better Lois Lane. In the process, they show how a non-powered person can effect change in a world full of super-heroes.
