Review: Marvel #1

Synopsis:

Alex Ross finally gets to bring his vision to the comics with stories of Marvel Superheroes as they’ve never been told. The issue begins with a nightmare creature taking over the world. which leads to two separate tales to astonish.

The Creative Team:

Espinoza, Saini, and Cowles bring us a variation of the Spiderman story. Here he’s taking on the Rhino in a madcap battle which is so cooly rendered which brings up the excitement level tenfold. I’m loving the homages to the original creative teams in this issue. Then Spiderman arrives home only to be chewed out by MaryJane. Oh, the life of a committed superhero. Then there’s a very Jack Kirbyesk Avengers story which seems to be taken right from their first ten issues. This story opens with Rick Jones trying out a new version of Tony Stark’s thought projector and what thing out of Rick’s brain does it show? I’ll give you three guesses and the first two don’t count. Just as the Avengers tell Rick to think of something else, the jolly green giant appears out of thin air! I’m loving the feel for this story as it brings me back to the old days of my comic book collecting years. It’s a tale fit for Stan Lee and Jack Kirby era fans/. Great stuff includes the appearance of the Revengers, kind of a Skrull, type of team. and Rick Jones out-logicine the Hulk.

The artistic team is great. In Spiderman, we have a slick painting type of artwork that matches Spidey’s fluid movement and captures his sleek fighting style. In the Hulk story, the art is early Kirby with Art Simek’s inking style. Highlights include the opening splash of the spiderman tale and the splash where the Hulk-vengers take on the Avengers.

In Conclusion:

This issue is a splendid homage to the silver age of comics that I grew up with. Theses stories are simply told about a time that was much simpler then today, at least it was for me, the only thing I had to worry about was where to get the $1.25 that I needed per month to collect the five comics I collected on a regular basis! After these two tales are wrapped up nice and neat the Nightmare has his own comeuppance…to be continued *** (8.2 rating)
