Review: Marvel Action Avengers #1

Synopsis:

What happens when Tony Stark and Pepper Potts are having a leisurely meal at a fine Bistro? Sounds like a boring introduction to a first comic book by two powerhouse companies, Marvel and IDW. But keep reading, after Tony brags to the waiter about how great he is an explosion happens a few blocks away and it is apparently the actions of terrorist organisation A.I.M. Tony leaps into action first and more Avengers follow.

The Creative Team:

Matthew K. Manning is clearly having fun with these Avengers and he brings us a fresh take on decades old characters. This is an easy read and the pacing is great. Iron Man’s team mates join him on this adventure but Tony seems confused. Not only that but he doesn’t seem to know how to use the Ironman armor anymore, leading his team mates to conclude that it isn’t Tony inside the armor. Manning keeps us guessing as to what’s going on and he’s having fun bringing this mystery to bear. Great stuff includes Tony Stark’s pompous attitude which is way more prominent here. Also the origin of A.I.M.

Joe Sommariva brings to mind many a Marvel animated series with his take on The Avengers. He does Marvel in an IDW way and its way good. The opening scene at the Bistro is hilarious as Tony plays up his own importance and the look on Pepper’s face is priceless as she sits through the B.S. that Tony is flinging! Highlights include the Avengers battle with the U-FOES and the splash where Tony dons his armor. The tongue is planted firmly in cheek and it makes the issue so much more fun.

In Conclusion:

Marvel and IDW are perfect companions in the new Marvel Action titles that are coming out. The basic fun of this issue is the guessing game the Avengers are having with Ironman. Is Tony inside the armor or is it an imposter? They never find out for Ironman takes off before they can discover the truth. They’re unable to track him down. We don’t know for sure until the last page what’s going on and it’s a shocker! To be continued. **** (9.2 rating)
