Review: Marvel Knights #2

Synopsis:

It seems that the world and its superheroes have repressed all memories of Superhero existence. Bruce Banner has the truth, in the form of notes that are left for him while he’s asleep. Banner has convinced a police officer named Frank Castle, who used to be the Punisher, the truth about superheroes and now they are on a mission to reawaken the superheroes to recognize who they are. But when Matt Murdock comes to the realization of his former self, he refuses to help them. Murdock tries to leave his office, but his friends don’t recognize him either, now, he’s face to face with his former love, Karen Page.

The Creative Team:

Rosenberg and Cates begin this issue with Matt Murdock face to face with his former love. He questions his sanity when he realizes that Karen is dead and he’s not talking to the person he thought he was talking to. Then we cut to a bloody Bruce Banner confronting police officer Frank Castle from four days earlier. The writers bring us into this story by triggering certain events that should be common knowledge to these heroes and making us wonder how much they remember and how much they will recall through the story. It’s a psychological thriller designed to get our heroes to think about what is reality and what isn’t. Great stuff includes Bruce showing Castle a picture of a Skull and Frank’s reaction to it and different heroes memories slowly returning.

Niko Henrichon brings us that gritty noir style that I always love. Grounding the characters in a realistic technique that fits this mystery tale quite well. I especially enjoyed his Frank Castle. Not the Punisher here, but with certain facial expressions, especially his reaction to Bruce Banner when Bruce shows him the skull. You can see a hint of his former self coming through. Highlights include the battle between Frank and Elektra also the first appearance of one of the heroes in costume (no spoilers.)

In Conclusion:

This is an intriguing tale, unlike any Marvel has given us before and it’s interesting to see the whole story played out. The cool thing is that they’re not rushing it. They pay attention to little details and take their time to tell the tale. The guessing game is why we keep coming back for more. We turn each page carefully, not knowing whose memory will return first and what will trigger that memory, the final page is a real mind blower, leading us to crave the next issue now! We don’t want to wait the extra month. Awesome work Marvel, keep it up! **** (9.3 rating)
