Review: Masters Of The Universe: Revelation #1
Kevin Smith and Company, know how to let the beat build. First, we got the official Netflix Masters of the Universe: Revelation trailer right before 4th July weekend then we got the Masters of the Universe #1 comic book written by Kevin Smith & Robin David, published by Darkhorse.
Story Recap:
The king of GraySkull was attacked by an Orlax and falls under a deep sleep. The Orlax is an ancient creature not entirely known to the sorceress, so He-man has to travel back in time in order to find a way to heal the king. What he finds is some groundbreaking news for old-school He-man fans.
First the Sword of power was made from metal acquired in a deal with the devil.
I never even thought about that. I just assumed that the sword was enchanted. This definitely gives some dimension to He-man and the power that up till know he has been using for good.
Is it me or does that guy look a lot like Skeletor?
Secondly: Prince Adam wasn’t even the 1st He-man.
So umm..I guess the first He-man, and King of Grayskull was actually black?
So while that story is interesting enough, he just gives the Sword of Power to Prince Adam’S Father, who would one day become king, with no explanation.
Art:
The artistic team consist of Mindy Lee, colored by Rico Renzi, Lettered by Deron Bennet. The artistic style isn’t common to today’s comic book style. It feel like it was targeted more at children. Which makes sense if they want to appeal to the next generation.
Script:
Masters Of the Universe: Revelation #1, is quite different from some of the old stories I remember as a kid. In those stories He-man narrative has always ran parallel to stories about fairytales, and mythological creatures, but with a more masculine bent. The current issue has a Wish granted, debt coming due feel to it.
Speculation Outlook:
A lot of 1st appearances here, that I would not be surprised if they somehow make it into the Netflix Series. To make it better this issue has two covers. One of which is a CVR B by Mike Mignola. The Cover A is by Stjepan Sejic.
SCORE: 5/5 color me mind blown.
