REVIEW: Mechanism #5

I was fortunate enough to be the staffer here at CC that received the advanced review copy of Mechanism #1. I wrote a glowing review of the series then and I’m happy to report that now, at the end of the first story arc, this title is still one of the strongest premieres Top Cow has had in years. It feels good to have placed my trust in the talented hands of writer and artist Raffaele Ienco.

This is one of comic’s best Sci-Fi offerings this year, regardless of publisher. This series has elements that can be traced back to movies like Aliens, Predator, Terminator, and Avatar; and also shares inspiration from literary classics like H.G. Wells’ “War of the Worlds”.

This is the issue where the invading alien horde takes over the planet, and as mankind is being systematically wiped off the map, a robot and a super computer gone rogue might be our only hope. There is enough action in this issue alone to fill a typical third act in any Hollywood action movie. At the end we are left to ponder if man will survive the loss of their place at the top of the food chain.

The story and the art have been on point from the very beginning and the quality still remains top-notch here. This is a craftsman building his opus and we all get the privilege to watch him work. You can tell that Ienco has put his blood sweat and tears into this comic. Every panel is flawless, the story moves at a pace that drives the plot forward moment to moment, leaving the reader at the mercy of the narrative. You can’t turn the pages fast enough… but why would you want to? You have to stop and take in all the beautiful artwork that each page contains.

When Mechanism began I hailed it as the next big Image property. A series that has the necessary chops to become the next major franchise to rival that of The Walking Dead; I believe that now more than ever. If this comic could find its way into the hands of the right director we could be talking about the birth of the next Sci-Fi classic. Only time will tell if we ever get to see Hollywood’s take on Mechanism, but comic fans have it pretty good right now getting to enjoy this amazing work unfold in front of them.

Final Thoughts: Pure Excellence.

Final Grade: 5 Stars

Art/Story: Raffaele Ienco
Publisher: Top Cow
