With Mighty Morphin #1
Ryan Parrott presents a classic Ranger identity mystery and then add a great twist. The tale starts in the distant past showing the ancient Guardians of Eltar battling the evil Hartunian on the planet Artavias. Hartunian rides on an epic Ortivox as he threatens heroes including Zophram, Zartus and Zordon.
We arrive back at the present where the Power Rangers are working to discover who the new Green Ranger is. The suspects include Rocky“s friend Matthew who wears the number 7 on his t-shirt, an imprisoned Drakkon and Skull“s cool new girlfriend Candice.
Meanwhile Finster and the other villains work to resurrect Zedd. They unleash the monster Pandamonium leading to a great action sequence highlighting the incredible art by Marco Renna. The new Green Ranger arrives with a new Dragon Strike move that has even Tommy jealous. The creators are able to give all the Rangers some character development as they work through the mystery. It“s also nice to see a return to classic humor as they fight silly monsters.
The issue ends with Zedd returning and the story revealing the Green Ranger mystery was a distraction from an even greater revelation. Candice is one of the Guardians of Eltar. This issue is a return to a more classic tone which is nice as the Rangers should have moments of lightness. That being said it would be a bit too silly if the only mystery was the Green Ranger trope. Having Zordon“s origins and the ancient group of Guardians be a focus brings a much more interesting nuance to the story.
The expanded characterization of the Rangers throughout the issue is welcome. We simply never got as strong a sense of the individual personalities of Rocky, Adam and Aisha in the original series so any expansion on them is great.
The art and colors are classic Ranger cool. Not all the characters look exactly as we remember from the show but the art is strong and the characters are easy to differentiate. The art shines the most in the extremely well done action sequences. This is a great start to a brand new Ranger era and it will be interesting to see how Zordon“s past will return to haunt the Rangers.Â
