Throughout all of the comics I’ve read, and especially with the books I have reviewed, I haven’t reviewed one that has such a strong belief infused within the book. Murder #1 is the first book to do just that. Written by Matthew S. and Brittany Loisel, with the art by Emilano Correa and Lettering by Micah Myers, they bring a strong message about the practices with food, and especially with animals that are involved within that message.

While I personally am not vegan, and to be honest it’s not my thing, I have no issues with people who are and the lifestyle that comes with it. That being said, I wanted to make sure that as I not only read the book, but that I personally took my own opinions about the subject matter. That being said, here we go.

Murder #1 brings the story about what happens to the animals that are brought to the reality of what happens to them in the food industry. The message is strong, and very prevalent, but at no point did I feel that it was being forced into my face. The team take a risk to create the characters and the lengths that they will go to in order to protect the animals that they have. We get a glimpse of what the animals may think or feel as they go through these experiences. Emilano does a phenomenal job capturing that emotion whether it be fear, confusion, determination or any other expression that these animals may experience.

The story, is going to bring a fun surprise that is going to take the story to a new level that I appreciated and brought depth. I’m intrigued to see where this story goes and to see how they take these characters which we don’t know a whole lot about right now. That’s ok because when it comes to any comic book, regardless of the message and the agenda, there’s a fine line of how to work that belief and/or agenda into the book with having a captivating story interwoven within it.

The art work I felt was top-notch, and the lettering also was top-notch. There’s a true skill when utilizing the black, white and grey color schemes within the book, and I feel that they did just that. The overall experience was one that I saw as shocking and educational. In fact I learned a little bit more about how people view this particular issue. I didn’t feel like the message was forced while telling their story of these people who are taking their beliefs to a new level, which is impressive in itself. There’s a fine line that they walked, and they walked it like a professional tightrope walker. I’m excited to see how this story progresses, and how they develop the characters and the bonds that they have with their respective animals etc. My only issue was the flow seemed to jump a little erratic. Not a whole lot, but it did make the flow of the book a little sluggish. Aside from that, as I’ve said before, they did a great job sharing their message and infusing it within the pages to create a story that I think will definitely open a lot of eyes and minds.
