Review: NEW MUTANTS #14
With the other half of the Marvel Universe, running around trying to figure out how to survive the oncoming onslaught that is Knull, God of the Void, and the Darkness. It was only a matter of time before The Shadow King showed up. This time in keeping with tradition some of the story is related to one of his vessels Amahl Farouk.
The past of Amahl Farouk, as an alienated youth who suddenly had several significant events regarding his family strongly correlates to some of the younger residents of Krakoa, and their current standings. Let us be honest, there have been several significant changes, to what was originally promised for Krakoa. The reasoning behind why some of those promises don’t make any sense. The changes are apparently a major source of stress, so the Quite Council found it best to give them something to do, like training.
That’s where Amahl Farouk, and the Shadow king come in, As a Yogi for the alienated youth of Krakoa Island that still haven’t found a way to fit in. Which I feel is an excellent utilization of the character. I just wish it had been sooner to coincide with all the other excitement.
As for the art by xxx they did an excellent job depicting and integrating some complex ideas. But it the issue at time has some organic anachronistic issues. The captions state that the first few pages were during the 16th century, but there are several figures wearing Red Fez Hat. That would be akin to drawing soldiers during the American Revolutionary War, wearing Baseball caps. Also, I must wonder if the Epidemic that Killed Farouk’s father was the Plague of 1771.
