Review: Power Rangers #16
The first thing one is inspired to do on finishing this fantastic finale of the Eltarian War is to race to ensure Ryan Parrott is continuing to write this series. This book has added so many layers to the Rangers mythos and it’s a relief to know that he’s continuing on even as he closes the book on his Mighty Morphin series.
The issue unfortunately starts with an absolutely inane conversation between Zedd and Zordon. Zordon postulates that when he says ‘May the power protect you’, he’s never referring to an actual higher power but rather our actions and decisions. Adding a secular argument to a clearly mystical power is just silly and reductive.
That being said, the remainder of the issue is a fantastic end to the entire epic that has been this run of the Rangers’ story. Zordon and Zedd have realized they were once friends and part ways in peace after defeating their common enemy. Similarly in Angel Grove with the Empyreals defeated the remaining Eltarian forces yield. Zordon arrives and joins Billy to reform his chamber. The Omegazords are injured when Drakkon calls Trini to reveal that he sent them help during the battle as his parting gift. Trini reminds Drakkon of his potential to do good.
Billy and Grace work together to save Zordon. He switches to a new power chamber but only after he takes a final stroll atop a Zord. The Blue Emissary bids the Omega Rangers farewell. Baboo, Squat, Finster and Goldar are allowed to leave given their part in taking down the Eltarian forces. Zelya reveals her alien true form to Skull and says farewell. The minions return to Zedd only for them all to depart together.
The character work, art and colors of this issue shine and carry us through the many farewells. This issue does not quite have the energy of the prior but that is to be expected in an epilogue issue. It is a great ending to a solid Power Rangers epic, and hopefully the beginning of much more.
