REVIEW: Purgatori : Witches Get Stitches Pt.1

Fawkes treats readers with another foray into the world of arguably one of Dynamite’s greatest and most recognizable characters. Purgatori is back fresh off the heels of her battle “against” Vampirella, with the effects of her encounter with Lillith still weighing heavy on her being. Readers find Purgatori at a temple in deep mediatation being guarded by monks , while a coven that looks like they did not make the cast for the latest iteration of “The Craft” plots a spell to do some devious things to Purgatoro once she comes out of her trance.

They send an ensign to speed up the process, who literally cuts through the monks with a soul-sword more reminiscent of a Sith saber than anything Psylocke has ever projected. Blood splatters on Purgatori as Fawkes has her dive deep on how her vampire powers work through her musings, which feature the most emphatatic from of soul-sucking that I have ever read of in vampiric lore. So emphatatic that it sounds almost non-fictionalized the way the focus on Purgaatori’s powers is more about sucking about a person’s life force as a vampire, and that doesn’t always translate to A or B blood. Still there’s plenty gore provided by the team of Sarraseca & Aiala as the monks get cut down to size and Purgatori , completely oblivious to any of this, looks cute as ever surrounded by complete carnage.

This new Purgatori arc is loaded with mystery, sensuality, and violence using touchstones of previous pop culture successes but not going to far with those influences so as not to be classified as an original work that will leave readers questioning what will come next as they reach the last page. With Purgatori here in this brand new number one, “Witches Get Stitches” is the new benchmark on how to win over crowds both familiar and brand new to the Dynamite imprint .

Score : 4/5
