Review: Quince #1 – 3

G’Day Crusaders,

This is Dodgy in the mix bringing you Quince by Sebastian Kadlecik (creator), Kit Steinkellner (writer) and Emma Steinkellner (art duties). Proudly published by Fanbase Press.

The story begins with a young Latin-American girl named Lupe is the centrepiece of this story. Just like any girl turning 15, she’s starting her venture into adulthood in regards to puberty, social status and her attractions towards the opposite sex. As her Quince (short for Quinceañera, a Latin American celebration of turning 15) is fast approaching, and on this day – nothing is the same! On the day of her 15th birthday could turn out to be the best present or could be a curse.

I enjoyed the art and storytelling of this book, it feels real! The monologue helps the reader and the conversation with the Aunt who acts like a conscience is a great addition. The way the story tells the story of a minority character who enjoys comics from the big 2, I liked how she reminds us of issues a lot of demographics are facing, “my favorite characters look nothing like me!” The character facial movements and expressions are fun to watch over again – I cannot help but think the art style of the character remind me of Lilo from Disney’s Lilo & Stitch! The Steinkellner sisters are a great team!

My only gripe, is that this book is 10 pages long. This means these 3 books are about the lenght of a traditional comic book. I look forward to reading issue 4 onwards!

This is a family friendly book available in both English and Spanish, a great read – do ya“self a favor and check it out!
