Review: Raven Daughter of Darkness #7

Synopsis:

This issue begins with a prologue as Fauna Faust, Sorceress Supreme, breaks into St. Cyprians Museum of the Macabre. She’s disappointed because she doesn’t have an audience to witness her cunning skills as a thief. Then the cops show up! Perfect witnesses to her robbing John Domingo, the Black Constable. But as the cops are about to put the cuffs on her, she literally vanishes through a wall.

The Creative Team:

Marv Wolfman makes a sensational introduction to this issue with the Sorceress Supreme in top form as she dazzles her audience into a stupor. After her dramatic departure, she arrives at a house but has an unusual follower, literally, as she turns around to see what appears to be a demon on horseback. Then he cuts to the heroine of this issue while she’s struggling through High School. She and several other students will have to take a makeup test the next day. It’s always fun to see our heroes weaknesses, as well as their strengths and Wolfman, knows the right balance between what our characters need to complete the job at hand and what they need to do just to dwell among us mere mortals. Great stuff includes Raven being targeted by the Arcanes and a quick history lesson of the Shadow Riders in question.

Pop Mahn gives us some great visuals in this title as his panels help the story unfold in a unique way. His depictions of the Arcanes are top-notch and how he shows Raven struggling to blend into earth culture and history class brings us some interesting moments, not to mention facial expressions. Highlights include The opening splash and first appearance of the Arcanes themselves. Also the flashback to Uraguay 24 years ago. Mahn bringing us seamlessly back and forth from past to present.

In Conclusion:

It’s fun to see Raven struggle in real-world situations that most of us can relate to, like cramming for a test, however, she has advantages that most of us don’t have in that she can send her Raven-self to the library to look up the answers, however, she doesn’t cheat. She could just as easily have used her bird self to look on someone else’s paper for the answer instead of sending her bird-self to the library for the answer. Then we dig deeper into the Arcanes themselves and their reason for wanting our protagonist. It’s not a pretty one! This issue leaves us hanging on the edge as we learn that Raven is the only who can stand up to these characters! Or is she…to be continued! *** (8.2 rating)
