Review: RAVENCROFT #3 (OF 5)

“Who knew insane asylum guard would be my calling?? – Dennis Dunphy

Synopsis:

Marvel’s answer to Arkham Asylum, Ravencroft, has been rebuilt and it not only houses villains but heroes too! Who is at the heart of this institution? Why, none other than the mayor of New York Wilson Fisk, the former (yeah right) Kingpin of crime. Even though on the surface Fisk has turned his back on his wicked ways, there are those at Ravencroft that still have issues with his honor!

The Creative Team:

Frank Tieri opens this issue with Dennis “The Demolition Man” Dunphy in a standoff with Frank Castle, A.k.A. the Punisher. Throw in the Taskmaster and we have one violent Ménage à Trois on our hands! I really enjoy the edgy atmosphere that Tieri brings to this issue. We have four of the baddest asses in the Institute about to explode on each other and this makes for an incredible read. Great stuff includes the confrontation between Norman Osborn and Ashley Kafka also the tension between John Jameson and Grizzly.

Unzueta, Louis, and Hanna bring these characters to depraved life as each of them show off their bad side and give in to their weaknesses. The art in this story reflects these characters’ inner selves and deepest desires. The images are captured perfectly by this outstanding team. Highlights include the battle between John Jameson and Grizzly also the final splash.

In Conclusion:

Unleash the testosterone! All of these guys are pumped up and ready to fight. It’s a slugfest that showcases Marvel’s best assassins as each wants to take down the other, their plans interrupted by the former Kingpin as he realizes that he needs all of these thugs in one piece. The issue builds to a rousing climax as we meet…to be continued! ***1/2 (8.5 rating)
