REVIEW: Red Sonja and Vampirella meet Betty and Veronica #6

“Please stop thinking we vampiri all look alike. My name is Vudosol. We’re not all Dracula, you know.” – Vudosol.

Synopsis:

The final chapter, or is it. This issue brings the tale of the first meeting between these sorority sisters to a close. It’s been fun watching how two average girls take on the help of these alien ladies and help to solve a Riverdale murder mystery. The issue opens when we discover the truth about the vampires and who they really are. Their mission hasn’t been as straightforward as you’d think, but we have fun learning a thing or two about this issues antagonist that may shock you.

The Creative Team:

Amy Chu keeps the pace manic from page one right up until the end. The characters’ interactions resemble the buddy films of yesteryear, the kind they don’t make any more; Laurel and Hardy, Lewis and Martin, Abbott and Costello, or, to be a little more contemporary and gender appropriate; Thelma and Louise. The characters have grown since the first issue and are closer than ever. I’m not going to reveal anything here but we finally find out whodunit and it’s a clever bit of storytelling. I really enjoyed how this tale ended with a satisfactory wrap up of events and the chemistry between the ladies. It’s a great little yarn and one most people wouldn’t think could have been pulled off, but it’s masterfully done and I’m hoping that this isn’t a one-time effort. These four need to team up again. Great stuff includes the reveal of Vampirella’s relationship to the antagonists and Dilton’s command of a school bus.

Sanapo, Silva and Anton do an amazing job of uniting the characters that you wouldn’t think could happen, but everyone looks like they belong together and, indeed, they do. Two ladies out of time and place adjusting to 21st century Riverdale. Going through culture shock and understanding each other. The renderings here and facial expressions are completely done. Highlights include Vampirella taking flight and the football team joining Red Sonja in battle.

In Conclusion:

This series has been so much fun, even though it’s a murder mystery and deals with some mature content. It’s amazing how this creative team has brought this story full circle and linked Vampirella’s homeworld into the proceedings. Vampirella’s responsibilities bring her home. Red Sonja’s presence is perfunctory, it’s like she’s only needed to be the muscle, but what makes her a necessary character is the way she has to interact with present-day reality, being taken out of time. She provides a lot of the humor for each issue and is definitely needed for the conclusion. One of the most unique inter-company cross overs I’ve read. **** (8.9 rating)
