Review: Savage Avengers #3
Synopsis:
Conan the Barbarian was seeking an amulet in the possession of Kulan Gath. Gath would do battle with a strange Symbiote creature, released by Conan himself, while the Barbarian escaped with the said amulet. Meanwhile, Wolverine and Doctor Voodoo are fighting for their lives in another part of the city. The Punisher enters the fray after the bodies of his family were stolen. This issue opens with the Punisher in the middle of a battle with a deadly assassin in an action-packed opening that sets us up for one hell of a ride.
The Creative Team:
Gerry Duggan is a storyteller that’s no stranger to danger as he brings out the best in our anti-heroes and then ups the stakes with this mysterious amulet. They finally face Kulan Gath together and that’s when it hits the fan! One of the warriors is smitten then taken over by the symbiote and it looks like curtains for these noble heroes. But, as they say, looks can be deceiving. Any title that unites these hardened combatants has got to have a ton of bloodshed, no PG shenanigans here. I’m once again enjoying some savage tales as only Marvel comics can bring them to us. This a no-nonsense take no prisoners issue that must see this team prevail. Great stuff includes the revelation of who Frank Castle was fighting at the beginning of this issue and the fate of Conan.
Mike Deodato Jr. and Frank Martin bring us the right atmosphere for this tale of horrific proportions. The Panels are sharp and the images are dark. Kulan Gath means business and he’s not afraid to kill to regain the amulet. Deodato’s illustrations are superb and Marvel’s lucky to have him. It’s Braun over brains as our favorite savages go all out to gain this all-important McGuffin, the amulet. Highlights include the splash of Conan in battle. and the closing splash page.
In Conclusion:
This title is an awesome team-up of some of Marvel’s most savage warriors and it’s a breath of fresh air from a company that, let’s be honest, hasn’t been doing much savages storytelling in recent years. No woke politics present here this issue and that’s a good thing! I celebrate the return of Conan to Marvel, loved the Dark Horse run but let’s be honest, Conan’s return to Marvel signaled a return to greatness for the beleaguered house of ideas. The company hasn’t been the same since Jim Shooter took over and it’s only now beginning to return to the greatness it once was, pre-Jim Shooter. After reviewing some great comics lately, I can now proclaim proudly once again: MAKE MINE MARVEL! **** (9.2 rating)
