Review: Savage Avengers #9

“You kill him your way, I’ll kill him mine!” – Conan

Synopsis:

Kulan Gath was forced to retreat, but can our hero’s claim victory? The savage barbarian Conan, a warrior displaced in time, has acquired the third eye of Agamotto, but he has been warned by both Victor Von Doom and Dr. Steven Strange not to underestimate its power. A great walled city has appeared out of nowhere in the Egyptian Desert. Could this be Kulan Gath’s new lair? The unlikely trio of heroes has decided to investigate. Dr. Doom, in his quest for power, did not heed his own warning and seized the amulet, to dire consequences.

The Creative Team:

Gerry Dugan unleashes the action with this issue. If the previous issue didn’t have enough action for you Marvelettes, this one more than makes up for it. I love how Marvel is returning to form with several of its titles. This is one of my favorites from the house of ideas. I never thought I’d like having Conan in the present-day marvel-verse, What if # 13 notwithstanding, but Conan fits with these savages perfectly. I love the banter between Conan and Dr. Doom, it’s almost as if our Barbarian were an ancestor to our Latveran monarch. This comic definitely lives up to the savage in its title as all characters show no mercy to achieve their goals Kulan Gath is one of the best Marvel villains to emerge in recent years and his bloodthirst is a strong reason to add this title to your collection. Not for the faint of heart. Great stuff includes Gath’s resistance to our hero’s attack and the astral projection battle between Gath and Strange.

Patch Zircher continues to bring these iconic characters to us with a savagery unparalleled in the Marvel Universe. Marvel has pulled out all the stops in its attempt to please us life-long fans and I am thankful to them for doing it. I love Zircher’s Conan as much as I loved Big John Buscems’ and it’s good to see Victor Von Doom back to being the insane megalomaniac that made him such a great character in the first place. Zircher’s take on these characters is the best it’s been in years! Highlights include the splash of Conan, and friend attacking Kulan Gath and the final splash with the fate of Stephen Strange.

In Conclusion:

Superhero comics done the way they used to be done. No political influence, no contemplative regrets on the past or reflections about what could have been and could be, just good old fashioned action and adventure. Marvel may be playing along with the political atmosphere that has infiltrated todays comic books, but they also haven’t forgot what made them great in the first place. This is an excellent read and an original tale with all the excitement that most comic books used to be about. Thank you Marvel for remembering those of us that made you great in the first place. ****1/2 9.6 rating
