Review: Star Trek Voyager: Seven’s Reckoning #1 (of 4)
Of all the Trek content that breached the TV of the 90’s the Star-Battle-Star-Trek-Galactica-Voyager show was probably the dullest. With a supposedly mixed crew, the descension between the crews pretty much left with Seska. The show was pretty formulaic right up until they added Seven of Nine. Then things got interesting, for a little while at least.
This new mini-sries is set right after Seven has joined the crew. Therefore, you’d think there would be some conflict, but no, two minutes after joining the crew she is beamed over to a derelict ship as part of the away team. First encounter protocols mean pretty much one thing; nothing is as it seems.
Dave Baker is no stranger to Trek after contributing to the Waypoint Special. Here, he gets to focus on possibly the saving grace of Voyager. With Seven’s involvement, there is an element of the unknown, which is what we kind of expected from the show in the first place. Baker does a great job at making the characters sound like their TV counterparts, though may have gone a little overboard with Tuvok’s over explaining of every thing. The plot might seem a tad repetitive, but as this is the first issue I am willing to cut a little slack on that aspect.
Tie-in’s require the characters to also look like who we would expect. Here, Angel Hernandez excels with some good facial aspects which is just as well when you consider that this era of Trek does a lot of walking around talking to each other. Hernanadez offers a well observed take on the familiar crew and settings, which makes the aliens a little disappointing as they seem quite interchangeable. Colors are provided by Ronda Pattison who tries to capture the tone and feel of the ship; the result however is a look that feels a little too digital and lacking of depth or texture. Finally, letterer Neil Uyetake delivers a nice clean font that makes for a nice easy read.
Star Trek Voyager promised so much. There was supposed to be friction in the crew, being as it was made up from Marquis members as well as Starfleet. As this failed to materialise, I am left to wonder, is Voyager better at assimilating than the Borg! Putting personal views on Voyager aside, this isn’t a bad little read for fans of Seven and the beginning of her time on board.
