REVIEW: Starve #3

Creative team of Brian Wood, Danijel Zezelj and Dave Stewart.

Don’t judge a book by its cover…The cover is very the walking dead looking. Sharp edges and dark tones. Fits the story well.

A long, long time ago in the last issue…No recap. Even though it starts off the next day after whatever happened,  it’s pretty easy to follow.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming…We start the day after Starve episode 2 aired on television. Angie is with her father helping him learn how to cook with love again.
Her mother hates her fathers for reasons I’m not too sure about. So Angie sneaks off to help her dad with episode 3. This time the chefs have To kill, butcher and prepare a pig for the judges. Angie and her dad make three amazing dishes and win the challenge. Her mother seeing them on TV calls the producers and tells them to challenge him to something they know he cannot win as Angie overhears. To be continued.

This is essentially a cooking show in comic form with all the back stage bits thrown in. Intertwined with the bonding of a father and daughter after what appears to be years of absents. It’s not a bad book for what it is. with It’s deep insights into family and the details of the recipes shown while cooking made it a very interesting read. Added to that the great dark artwork and this book is something special. The inner workings of television competition coupled with real feelings of love and hate between the three makes you want to see what happens next.

It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye…The slaughter and butchering of the pig was pretty visual. The artist did a great job.

The Good, the Bad and the Meh…
The Good – The artwork is top notch. The interaction with his daughter is so sweet.
The Bad – No recap means we don’t know why Angies mother hates her father so much.
The Meh – A little too much time spent on this pig slaughter.

Left me wanting more like all good books should. An easy 4 stars.

Hey, I'm Shane.
Been into comics since I was about 5. Loved watching Wonder Woman and superboy in the 80's.
I Started reading seriously about 10 years ago. Began to collect a few comic series, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, Teen Titans, Justice League of America and Superman Batman all pre flashpoint. Being honest that was my favourite run.
