REVIEW: Supergirl # 18

Synopsis:

The story opens with a ghostly apparition that informs Supergirl that her presence on earth is a threat, somehow, to the natural balance of things. Then, just like her cousin did in Superman 3, Kara runs into one of those photo booths and turns into Supergirl. A fight ensues and the strange alien ghost like lady discusses her origins during the confrontation. It seems that this new antagonist shares a lot in common with Superman’s cousin.

The Creative Team:

Jody Houser and Steve Orlando have come up with a great new antagonist for the girl of steel. She calls herself the Evolutionist and she’s not just fighting for control of the world, or the universe, or even to just be a bitch! She believes that Supergirl’s presence on earth is somehow disrupting her home world. She blames Kara for the death of her family. Just as Supergirl lost her home world this alien also lost everyone and everything that she loved. It seems that an alien race called the Zegor arrived at her home world and, even though they came in peace, they carried pathogens dangerous to her people and caused massive sickness and death. Great stuff includes the antagonists misguided sense of vengeance plus Ben offering to walk Kara home because it might still be dangerous. I really enjoyed the way our writers brought Supergirl into the thick of things from page one on and the antagonists pent-up rage in the attempt to seek justice for her fallen world.

Carmen Carnero brings his unique artistic style to the last daughter of Krypton and his renderings are a joy, the battle scenes between Supergirl and The Evolutionist are an awesome sight to take in as we learn more about the relationship between protagonist and antagonist. Both have an anguished past and dealt with the literal loss of both homeworlds. It is well depicted in these pages and by the looks on both characters faces we can see how it destroyed both of them and why they had to rebuild.

In Conclusion:

This issue finds Supergirl against an antagonist that she can relate to personally and she finds time to be sympathetic to the character as the story develops. She can’t hate her attacker even though it might be easy to do so. I thoroughly enjoyed how this issue unfolded and I hope to see more of this character as I don’t think their relationship developed as fully as it should have. And just when you think everything was going to wrap up nice and neat along comes… to be continued! (*** 7.6 rating)
