Review: Teen Titans #22
Synopsis:
This issue opens with Wallace West, trying to cope with the death of a friend. He argues with his fellow teammates about the fate of Roadhouse and can’t believe some of the cold indifference that he hears from certain members of the team. Red Arrow points out that they are not yet working as a team but as individuals who aren’t used to fighting alongside teammates. They have to learn, and fast, how to integrate with each other and how to deal with the various threats they come across.
The Creative Team:
Adam Glass shows us how these characters relate to loss in a different way as he brings our amateur team up against a different threat. They’re inexperienced and it shows. These Titans have a long way to go before they can live up to their older counterparts. Glass puts them in a situation where they have to face a conflicted foe who is stealing pharmaceuticals from a hospital, but instead of being a downright evil person, she is a victim of circumstance who doesn’t want to go to jail. When it’s time to act, Kid Flash is hesitant, even though he’s the fastest kid on earth. Great stuff includes Robin confronting Black Mask and a surprise guest with an even bigger surprise target. This one takes us deeper into the psyche of the team and produces a few surprises along the way.
Bernard Chang has a manic energy that is well suited to bring this newest incarnation of the Teen Titans to life. His panels are jagged and match the personalities of this team. His take on the characters shows us the contrast in their personalities and it’s a refreshing look at these teens who have to learn how to work together but have a long way to go before they are working as a unit. I really enjoy his take on the characters and highlights include the opening splash which puts us on top of the hospital as our antagonist takes a hostage and the final confrontation showing how our heroes resolve the crises at hand.
In Conclusion:
Another winner from DC comics showing the growing pains of a brand new team. The tension is there as we see how each team member reacts to a potentially dangerous situation. They face death head on…or do they? I really enjoy a good twist ending and this one has not just one twist, but three as the guest stars come out of the woodwork and bring different challenges to the newly formed team. But are they ready to take on these challenges? To be continued. *** (8.3 rating)
