Review: The Gravediggers Union #2

In the second issue of The Gravediggers Union, The Black Temple continues their quest to unleash The Dark Gods upon humanity and rule the world. Thankfully we have Cole, Ortiz and Haley, better known as the Gravediggers Union to try to stop them.

In this new offering from Image Comics, our three protagonists have a stated goal of protecting the living from the undead. With the supernatural world being turned upside down by the Black Temple they reach out to an unlikely source for help. They seek a witch named Morphea, who has an axe to grind with The Black Temple as well. With the long-standing disdain between the Union and witches, there is uncertainty this request will be well received.

As I read this issue, I could not help but read the dialogue of Morphea in the voice of Kathy Bates as Bobby Boucher“s mom Helen in the movie The Waterboy. I would be curious if writer Wes Craig had this in mind when he created the character. Her location in a swamp, and the trailer the Union finds her in, harkens back to this character. The writing is solid throughout. The broken English spoken by some of the characters only adds to the charm and authenticity of the comic.
Toby Cypress adds to the mood with his dark sultry settings in the artwork. He“s created a smokey, sultry world where magic and the people who practice it are not something to be toyed with. There is a distinct classic feel to the artwork that harkens back to the days of newsprint and stories of wizards. If you know me at all, you will understand that is high praise.

If you“re a fan of other books by Wes Craig, such as Deadly Class, or Blackhand Comics (which introduced us to The Gravediggers Union) then you“ll like this comic. The subplot of The Black Temple using Union member Cole“s estranged daughter Morgan as their prophet is compelling and will bring me back to find out where the story goes. I recommend giving it a look.
