Review: The Immortal Hulk: The Threshing Place #1
Synopsis:
A brand new Hulk title! I’m loving the direction Marvel is going with the Hulk character, he’s been far more malevolent than in recent years, a getting back to the basics that works wonders. I was even more ecstatic when I read that this title was written by Jeff Lemire. The story begins with our protagonist investigating the disappearance of Rebecca Green. Along the way three locals have been torn apart by what some consider to be a monster, others feel it was just a bear. The important question though is, what happened to Rebecca?
The Creative Staff:
Jeff Lemire brings out the savage in our jolly green giant as no other can. You don’t want to rub the Hulk the wrong way, it’s not wise and Lemire gives us the tragic reality of what it’s like when Bruce Banner and the Hulk are separated, no restraint in the emerald warrior. However, the Hulk is not a complete monster and really wants to save Rebecca from the calamity that has engulfed her. I enjoyed this one-shot very much, may Marvel keep churning them out. Great stuff includes the local’s reaction to Bruce Banner as he tries to discover the truth about Rebecca Green and the Hulk’s no-nonsense questioning of the suspects.
Del Mundo and D’elfonso keep the visuals realistic and bring out the amazing detail in the characters, these aren’t drawings their miniature paintings that would make renaissance artists proud. Highlights include the Hulk’s battle with a strange creature until he finds out the secret behind this monster and the final splash which is reminiscent of the old Bill Bixby/Lou Ferrigno Television series, I can almost hear the lonely man theme in my head as I enjoy the conclusion.
In Conclusion:
A hodgepodge of different Hulk type scenarios wrapped up in a nice little package. This title doesn’t hold back and we get the feel for the original character and how it was done in the early ’60s with a touch of the cinematic versions including Lou Ferrigno’s take on the character but with a modern sensibility, all while keeping the current savage persona intact an awesome read and enjoyable. ***1/2 8.8 rating.
