Review: Thor #5

Amidst all the reboots and renumberings, Donny Cates“ mind might be the closest thing we have to continuity in modern comics. He can leap from writing one character to the next, yet still maintains a larger arc managed from vastly different perspectives. Cates is able to craft massive epic tales that are at once new reader friendly and self-contained, while also rewarding fans who follow him from one book to the next.

This issue also finds Thor at a point of great failure on multiple fronts. He failed to save the people of the planet Kyro from Galactus“ hunger. Thor as herald has lead Galactus to their world as and failing to evacuate them in time, basically serves them up for him to devour. Galactus in turn has the greatest revelation of the story, he has been playing Thor as a patsy, claiming Thor“s help will empower Galactus to save the Universe when in fact he is simply out to save himself.

The interlude with Beta Ray Bill and Sif reminds readers of the larger context here, Thor as King has been fooled into playing servant to Galactus and aiding the murder of billions. This promises massive repercussions in the issues ahead.

Nic Klein“s art steps up to the cosmic expansiveness of this tale and the story allows him to showcase a gloriously powered Galactus, a massive host of classic villains And finally The Black Winter himself. The finale sets up a massive face off between The Black Winter and Galactus with Thor caught in the middle. All this while The Black Winter hints at an even greater threat on the horizon.

Cates has an imagination that clearly inspires artists to do their best work and this book alongside Cates and Tradd Moore“s Silver Surfer Black tell massive, beautiful cosmic tales that are still incredibly personal. Thor is everything great comics should be and every chapter leaves you absolutely needing to read the next.
