Review: Uncanny X-Men Annual #1
Synopsis:
This issue opens with a flashback scene complete with Cyclops in his original X-Men costume and the faded look of a comic book from ten years ago. There seems to be a giant robot wreaking havoc at Cambridge. Our hero discovers how to end the threat and one Paul Douek is eternally grateful to the X-Man. A cut and dry act of heroism that is appreciated by all! Also a fantastic way to open this issue as we see a mini history of Scott Summers and his evolution to the General he would become.
Ed Brisson jumps around from decade to decade in this tangled tale of how to bring Cyclops back into the world of Marvel comics. It turns out to be a good thing, not just for Paul and Cyclops, but for the whole Marvel universe, that Cyclops saved this man all those years ago. Without giving away too much It seems that without him there would be no hope for mankind or the universe as Marvel knows it. What draws us into the story is the seemingly impossible task laid at Douek’s feet. He also has only two years to figure out the solution. Great stuff includes the chore that Cable has laid at Douek’s feet and the surprise we see at Cyclops funeral, his first funeral. It’s going to be complicated to bring Cyclops back, but it will be worth it once he’s back!
Carlos Gomez captures the feel for Scott Summers throughout the entirety of Scott’s existence. His flashback panels are reminiscent of Lee and Kirby plus his recreation of storylines from other eras really feel authentic. His accomplishments are no simple feat and he delivers the artistic goods when it comes to X-Men history. Highlights include Scott’s resurrection as he blasts out of his own grave and the attack on Cambridge.
In Conclusion:
It’s a wild ride as we explore the psyche of Scott Summers. Brilliant writing makes this an easy, yet somehow complex, read. Cyclops saved Paul Douek so it’s only fitting that Paul return the favor here. Cable’s role is necessary to this story and I wouldn’t have it any other way. We get a tour of Scott’s life before we see his ultimate triumph over death. And this is Marvel story telling at it’s finest. **** (8.8 rating)
