Review: Vampirella #10

Synopsis:

In this universe Lucifer had taken over heaven but Vampirella succeeded in ousting him. However, God is nowhere to be found and people are surviving long after they should have died. It seems that their souls are still trapped in their bodies and now Vampirella is the brunt of everyone’s angst. This issue starts with a little exposition as to how Ra came to be and have 3 daughters in Egyptian mythology. Hathor, Bastet and Sekhmet. When Sekhmet fell out of grace with Ra, she had her powers taken away from her and had to live like a mortal, though she couldn’t die like one. Then she met Vampirella!

The Creative Team:

Jeremy Whitley knows his Egyptian mythology. He’s got Sekhmet down and it’s cool how she blends so easily into the Vampirella universe. This is unlike any Vampirella story I’ve ever read. It was haunting to see Sekhmet have her blood lust revived and tear into some standers by and it was scarily realistic how people watched and didn’t do anything but continue to watch, like so many horrific news stories I see day-to-day, from a homeless guy in Florida being cannibalized by a stranger on bath salts to watching a YouTube video of a woman being forced into a car and nobody lifting a finger to help. Yes, this story is realistic despite involving fictional creatures. Great stuff includes Sekhmet not knowing where to turn as she seeks out Vampirella, a kindred spirit but one that has her blood lust under control and the realization that there might be a cure for what is afflicting these hapless citizens. This is a great tale, unlike any I’ve ever read in recent Vampirella lore, less comedy more gore!

Andy Belanger, Matt Gaudio and Alex Sanchez hold nothing back in their renditions of the onslaught that is plaguing the good citizens of planet earth. This is definitely the goriest Vampirella story in recent history and Dynamite is the only company that can bring it to us in this fashion. Highlights include the injured and decapitated who literally can not die begging for death and the fight of Vampirella for her life and the life of the one she loves in the arena.

In Conclusion:

Immortality does have its little quirks and it seems our antagonist doesn’t know how to deal with them as her mind has snapped and she loses control of what little humanity she might have left. She has found a way to subdue the one she should be seeking help from and it’s an emotionally charged issue that takes no prisoners. It doesn’t look good for Vampirella as she is fighting a no win scenario, and even though she can’t die, indeed, no one can until god is found, she can still suffer at the hands of… to be continued.
