Review: Wonder Twins #3 (of 6)

Synopsis:

Mark Russell begins this tale at Morrison High School during the second period. Here Jayna seems to make a new friend in Polly Math, the daughter of Filo Math. Then we cut to the hall of justice where Superman is congratulating Zan and Jayna for completing their latest mission. After that we see Filo trying to resign from Lexcorp. Only thing is Mr. Math seems to owe Lex Luthor a handsome chunk of change, around 10 million dollars. And that my friends set up this issue for another exciting tale in the DC Universe.

The Creative Team:

Mark Russell sets this issue up to introduce us to Gleek, the not quite a monkey, monkey. When Filo leaves Lexcorp, he winds up still having to do Luthor’s will because of a substantial amount of money he owes Lex. Therefore Luthor has him join the League of Annoyance. This is a group of super-villain wannabes that’s already had one of their members (Drunkula) jailed thanks to the Wonder Twins. When Filo enters their meeting room, the gang is trying to figure out a way to spring Drunkula. The Leagues interesting and it would be fun to find out what their plans for Drunkula are. But as soon as the plan begins to unravel, it switches to become a Gleek origin story. Although Gleek is a fun character, his origin isn’t as exciting as the story that’s unraveling which concerns the conflict between Lex and Filo. Therefore it’s somewhat hard to invest in the characters and it seems that Russell wants to pique our interest until we get to the next issue. Great stuff includes the Scrambler breaking rank with the League and the Leagues clever way of discovering where Zan and Jayna live and apprehending the duo.

Stephen Byrne draws the characters to look the way they did on the old Superfriends show. This is great for those of us who grew up watching the shows as a kid and the art clearly leans to the Saturday morning cartoon watcher. This, of course, sets us up for the nostalgia effect and makes us old white dudes long for those golden days of yesteryear. Highlights include the splash of Gleek and the shark crashing through the tank.

In Conclusion:

Those who enjoyed watching the old Superfriends cartoons should get a kick out of this series. Even if you haven’t seen the show and just want a cool read, you’ll find it right here. Gleek is fun and the twins unite to solve another caper. Too much time is spent on Gleek when his story isn’t as exciting as the conflict between Luthor and Math, but it’s still a good read especially for the younger generation. The set up promises that the next issue will be more fun as… Wonder Twin powers…ACTIVATE! **1/2 (7.6 rating)
