Review: Wonder Woman: Black and Gold Vol 1 #1
Hard to believe but there was a weird time when Harley Quinn displaced Wonder Woman as the most popular female character. I think that was because Harley and her problems just unhinged as she seemed tended to be more down-to earth. Maybe she just needs more human stories.
Story Thus Far:
Wonder Woman: Black and Gold Vol 1 #1, a compilation of Wonder Woman stories ranging from World War II till present day. But these are not Just punch-and-go panels, these are stories that take the time to demonstrate the different sides of Diana. Whether it be her Super-her side, or her time as a patriot. But most interesting was the dynamic of her as a daughter and interaction with the Justice league.
Dialogue:
Each story provides There is a multi-perspective to Wonder Woman that fits very well. Her dialogue with the other characters very often spoke to the mystery around her mythical side and how it affects her entrenchment in the human world. Whether it is discussing her goddess-hood with the Justice league or trying to take care of her mother; this is what has been missing.
The down-to earth nature of Diana was attempted many times in the DCEU but did not quite hit. Wonder Woman: Black and Gold Vol 1 #1, simply has what some of the DCEU movies were not able to achieve. An organic textured approach that is relatable.
Wonder Woman: Black and Gold Vol 1 is entertaining and made me remember how much I like Wonder Woman, just in shorter narrative spurts. We have seen a lot of stories, but it works better if she is always not necessarily the center of the story. Considering that she is a god that is maybe where she works best. But while it does go far to address some of those gaps, then the What Does not Kill You, story it doesn’t do enough to restore her to her former glory.
