Review: X-23 #9

Synopsis:

This issue opens with Beast examining a wounded Cyborg who is, apparently, a clone of Laura Kinney. This clone is the subject of a murder investigation. What they don’t know is that a villain from their past has arrived and is creating a new threat! The cyborg’s DNA is corrupt so, her healing factor is compromised and, even though she’s been given an advanced weapons system. the alloy is not made of adamantium, making her weaker than Weapon X-23.

The Creative Team:

Mariko Tamaki reveals a lot about the new kid on the block as Beast conducts more tests and realizes that an outside force is trying to send the cyborg signals. Tamaki has Laura and Gabby making the rounds to find out the human identity of their newest clone. Bringing about questions of loyalty and family and who created this latest clone and as a cyborg to boot. The reader becomes intrigued by the possibilities that this character raises. Not to mention why someone would create this particular clone. Apparently she was created for the sole purpose of being an assassin. Great stuff includes Gabby’s obsession to the newest clone and the unknown intentions of the latest clone/cyborg.

Olortegui, Wong, Mayer and Hanna serve up some delicious looking art work which is highly complimentary of the tale in this issue. The opening scene with Gabby singing sets the tone for her attitude in this issue, she doesn’t view the cyborg as a threat, but a family member who lost her way. The scenes with Hank examining our new friend are well executed and highlights this issue include Laura’s battle with some bad ass robots and the cyborgs cold and calculating response to Gabby.

In Conclusion:

We’re this close to discovering the brain behind this cyborg/clones attack on our heroes. Is it possible to redeem her or is she a total vegetable by this point? As Gabby tries to reach this robotic unit, Laura is busy tracking her creators and this whole issue culminates in a show of strength on the part of our heroes with the cyborg…to be continued. ***1/2 (8.8 rating)
