Review: X Lives of Wolverine #3

Benjamin Percy is taking us on a roller coaster ride through the life of Wolverine and strong character work and incredible artwork makes it a journey well worth taking. Percy is filling this book with massive moments and huge stakes through time. Joshua Cassara uses the different eras and perspectives of this book to create a true masterpiece. Frank Martin gives us some of the greatest color work in the modern era.

Even as Logan fears the regret and rage that may result through revelations and reminders of his past it reminds us of the richness of this character and supporting cast. Omega Red has gained the means to hop through time and take the form of any character in history. He uses this power to endanger Xavier. As Logan uses the combined powers of Jean Gray and Xavier to travel through history in pursuit, Omega Red makes a more direct attack on Wolverine’s own history.

We get a cascade of astonishing art as we witness the attacks and battles across time. In Northern Canada at the turn of the last century, Xavier’s ancestor is attacked with a spear as Logan comes in on defense and a whale comes in for an attack. The action shifts to another time in Japan where Logan’s wife is attacked endangering an early death that could mean Daken never exists. Omega Red takes over the form of his wife, attacking Logan and inspiring Romulus to attack her.

We flash to Siberia to see how Omega Red was empowered to carry out these attacks. We move to Columbia where Omega Red takes over Sabretooth  to attack. Wolverine fights off these enemies only to arrive in the Amazon where Xavier is giving an environmental talk.

The issue ends with the horrific realization that as Jean guides Logan to this place it is Logan himself who has been taken over by Omega Red. This is an excellent twist capping off an incredible issue that takes us on a true journey without making it feel rushed. The art gives all of this the depth and epic scope it deserves. We are left at a true cliffhanger that will bring us all into the second half of this epic.
