Review: Z Nation #2

2 years into the Zombie Apocalypse and food is running low, so low that the only hope for survival is a revolutionary new food supplement that was meant to end world hunger before the world ended called Soylent Z, a chalky power that simply needs water to become a meal. With intel on the location of a cache a team head out to find it and bring it back to starving people, hoping the only obstacles are the hordes of undead the team arrive just in time to see a group of survives from a cruise liner, who now think themselves pirates take the food and kill two of their team before boarding the ship and heading out to sea. After sneaking on board and bumping into some less than willing crew members the remaining members are prepared to mutiny to take out the wannabe pirates… that is until some actual pirates arrive to pillage and plunder the loot from all of them.

If you’ve seen the show you’ll know that it doesn’t take itself too seriously, the Walking Dead it ain’t. Where the Walking Dead builds characters and focuses on the trials and punishments of being a survivor in a world not worth surviving in and letting you grow to care about the team before shockingly killing them off, Z Nation focuses on over the top gore while killing off members of the team before you actually care about them removing all shock value.

That said it’s not a bad contrast to the Walking Dead with this being more about action for readers (and viewers) who think too much story is a bad thing (I’m not in that category if the story is told well) the art is pretty good, bright and clean with some gory panels and some gnarly looking Zombies. Comparing it to the walking dead is unfair but inevitable even from issue one. Zombie books and shows are my favourite right now and this scores high, the story moves quickly and the action isn’t boring and only being two issues in I can forgive that we know nothing about the characters but by the end of this story arch that needs to change.

I give this book a solid four stars and if you’ve read my reviews for Self Storage you’ll know that got five stars each issue and this is far from as good but still gets a four so it gives you some idea of how good this is.

Hey, I'm Shane.
Been into comics since I was about 5. Loved watching Wonder Woman and superboy in the 80's.
I Started reading seriously about 10 years ago. Began to collect a few comic series, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, Teen Titans, Justice League of America and Superman Batman all pre flashpoint. Being honest that was my favourite run.
