Spider-Man 2099 #2 Review

(W) Peter David (A) Will Sliney (CA) Alexander Lozano

REVIEW

Peter David continues his different take of superhero comics in Spider-Man 2099 #2, which delivers a great character driven issue and finds a voice entirely of its own among the various spider titles from Marvel.

This issue sees the plot deepen with regard to Miguel being a man out of time and how certain characters may use this to their advantage, this is very heavily dialogue based and David makes this work fantastically. It is not your typical superhero comic, sure it opens with Miguel stopping a bank robbery but, soon moves to the character interactions as David is building the supporting cast in Miguel’s corner of New York and dealing with some very heavy material that comes across as very tastefully done and makes you feel a real connection to these characters (for a comparison see Jason Aaron’s Thor God of Thunder issue 12.) Miguel himself comes across as a bit of an asshole, Peter Park this man is not and it makes it refreshing that he is somewhat an antihero in the way that he deals with the criminals he comes across, he deals a different kind of justice and it’s so refreshing that David picks up this character and continues to show just how much a unique voice he character has. You may not agree with how Miguel deals out justice but, the character is so engaging and appealing that you can’t help but want to find out more.

Will Sliney and Fabela do some absolutely stunning work with this book they are allowed to cut loose in the bank robbery scenes showing how effective a superhero the Spider-Man of 2099 is but, the work really shines in the dialogue heavy sections. Particularly in facial expressions and the body language these characters show, there is real care in this art and it is wonderful to read without being overly expressive, everything just feels natural in the way these characters converse and interact.

Spider-Man 2099 is a great read, I have loved the character for a long time so I am a little biased but, this is a different kind of superhero book. It is heavily character driven and focus’s less on fists flying and web-slinging and more on character interaction and a man out of time trying to find his way in a world he knows nothing about. A solid read that will generate a very loyal fanbase for a long time to come.

4/5
