Star Trek Discovery Trailer Reveals Interesting Spock Developments

After dropping a relatively ambiguous trailer back in May for Star Trek: Discovery, US TV network CBS and Netflix recently debuted a new trailer for the upcoming series at Comic-Con, giving us more an insight into just what can be expected when the series begins on September 24th later this year. The show’s Comic-Con panel revealed several new exciting details about the series, revealing that d the lead character, Michael Burnham (The Walking Dead’s Sonequa Martin-Green), will play Spock’s adoptive sister. In addition to this, fans were given a look at the stunning visuals set to be on show, including various costume designs, props and and concept art.

So far, we know that Discovery follows the crew of a Federation starship and the main cast will include crew members from the Discovery itself, a Klingon vessel and another currently unnamed Starfleet ship. The story will follow Michael Burnham’s career and her subsequent rise through the ranks of Starfleet, with various story arcs including the character’s aforementioned connection to fan’s favorite Captain Spock. The story will be set around 10 years before the original series and we are told that the first 15-part season will feature a cold war conflict with the Klingons, who will speak entirely their own language throughout the show, with English subtitles for those not quite nerdy enough to speak fluent Klingon.

Much of the story will focus on Spock’s father Sarek (played by James Frain) and his relationship with Starfleet officer Burnham, who lost her parents at a young age and was raised in the Vulcan tradition by Spock’s parents and one would assume that Sarek’s human wife, Amanda Grayson will also feature throughout the program, with Discovery creator Bryan Fuller stating last year that he was very keen to make sure that Grayson had a prominent role in the series. It remains to be seen whether the most logical Science officer himself will make an appearance, however, modern day Spock Zachary Quinto has recently refused to rule it out although he concedes that he won’t be playing the role if it does indeed happen.

Any mention of Spock is bound to whet the appetite of true Trekkies, as he is one of the most widely recognizable and best known characters in the franchise. Leonard Nimoy’s legendary portrayal of Spock in the original Star Trek series has forever been immortalized and the characters iconic bowl cut, coupled with his Vulcanesque pointy ears, has lead to him being prominently featured throughout the world of sci-fi popular culture, spawning a wide range of Spock merchandise, appearing in sci-fi tv show favorite The Big Bang Theory even featuring in a fully customizable weapon skin for Counterstrike Global Offensive over on www.case51.com.

Star Trek: Discovery was originally intended in January of this year but was subsequently pushed back to May and finally to Fall 2017. Due to these push-backs and the departure of original show runner Bryan Fuller, there have been numerous reports of problems behind the scene but with the trailer successfully whetting appetites at Comic-Con, as well as new details of the series being gradually revealed, it seems that any possible problems are a distant memory and the show looks set to be a hit when it airs in September on CBS.
